What is Digital Marketing anyway?

Digital marketing is any marketing activity done online to connect a brand or service with potential new customers. We may use any combination of social media, websites, search engines, blog posts, mobile devices, or other media outlets to get our messaging out.

Marketing once consisted of Print, Television, and Radio. With the advent of the internet, many of these traditional marketing channels have been on the decline. Magazines and newspapers were once a great place to spend your advertising dollars but even they are largely moving online. 

​Brand marketing is still done with a combination of traditional and digital marketing today but Google has become the 800 pound gorilla in most ad rooms. Yelp, Bing, and Facebook are likely the next largest platforms where tons of marketing transactions are generated daily. 

So with so many options to choose from, where do we focus? Great question! We strive to understand the goals of each new customer and develop a plan to tap into as many of these platforms as possible. In some cases, we generate a complete marketing platform which allows us to quickly spin up or down any one of these areas or when appropriate and budget supports it, all of the above and more. In other cases, we may just focus on the companies website as the hub and improve the overall flow of traffic to that source of information. These choices are determined by doing an analysis of both what the starting point is and where we can get the best bang for the buck over time.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of making a website appear and rank as a higher authority on the subject matter content of the website so that it is shown more often in the results of search engine(SERPs) queries by end users. Search engines "crawl" millions of web pages and index content so that when their customers(person searching online) search a topic, they know who has the best information on that subject. 

There are many types of SEO so let's talk about some:
  • On-page SEO - This refers to some of the structure of your web pages. If done incorrectly, you may get dinged by search engines as not a serious source for information. Following the many suggested approaches to web page development allows the search engines to rapidly crawl and index the content you are providing and this scores points. Indexing takes note of the various keywords in your content. Quality of content, meta descriptions, title tags, and links to other information are all things considered in on-page SEO. Image size and descriptions can also play a role.
  • Off-page SEO - Backlinking, customer reviews, guest posts, and social signals are some of the off-page examples where optimization can occur. The more pointers back to your site you can generate, the more important your content must be in the eyes of a search engine.  
  • Local SEO - Making sure your NAP(Name, Address, & Phone) are the same across listings and on all pages ensures people searching in your area for what you offer match up and sync. Being in the "map pack" is very important today. That means creating a google business profile and making sure it syncs up with the rest of your data is key. 
  • Technical SEO - Making sure pages load in a timely fashion and correcting errors might seem like a no brainer but these things need to be constantly monitored over time. A good website is constantly changing and as changes are made over time, this issues can creep into the mix. 

This is only a subset of the many tasks we verify and focus on when we take on an SEO client. The many overseas calls coming into this country from 99.00 - 200.00 a month SEO services with the same tag line, "we recently reviewed your website and while you have done a great job, your not showing up on page one"...
